What some may say
is your shadow side
might be

the gift of a tree
planted
by someone you never knew.

These hand hewn steps
this soft sewn grass
this rough red road –

all
were laid
by someone  you never knew.

Someone who set their spine
against this stone wall
and longed.

Someone who dreamed
of dappled shade, damp grass
shelter from the swelter of sun.

Someone who knew
you could never thank them
and yet

the possibility
of your peace
was enough for theirs.
